“Fathers lead their children down the path to adulthood in the hopes they leap beyond the boundaries and forge new ones.”
While we take comfort in the arms of our fathers, we hardly express our gratitude and love for them. Father’s day is the one day where you can get as emotional as possible while conveying your feelings towards your dear dad. This is the day when you can make him feel special and appreciated for all his contributions in your life.
Father’s day is just around the corner. And, have you given any thought to what you are going to do for your father? If not, it is time to buckle up and start planning a surprise day for him that will help you express your feelings. And, here are few fabulous yet simple ideas for you to get started on. You can follow these exactly as listed or use them as inspiration for other ideas:
- Give your dad the gift of one-on-one time
When was the last time you and your dad spent some quality one-on-one time together? As busy as you and he both are, it may not happen very often. Break the ritual of not spending time together. To let him know how much time with him means to you, make him a small series of thoughtful father’s day greeting cards. Write the things that you will be doing with him and give your dad the card. You can choose to do many errands together or spend a good afternoon or evening of father-daughter or father-son time. This does not need to be an errand in particular.
In fact, you can give him the chance to decide what he wishes to do and bond with you. Or, if he does not come up with anything particular, you can just do the things that are dear to him. If your dad likes to eat out, invite him to lunch with you at his favorite restaurant. If your father likes to be outside, pack a picnic and the two of you can take a hike and then stop for a picnic lunch. It really does not matter what you do, it is the time together that will mean something to you both.
- Breakfast in bed with a twist
Get up early on father’s day and make him a delicious and healthy father’s day breakfast. It does not have to be complicated or fancy. It can be something as simple as a toast, dad’s favorite fruit and a glass of milk or orange juice will work. Serve the breakfast along with the morning newspaper or dad’s favorite reading material. For the twist, while your dad is eating, provide some homemade entertainment, read him a poem you have written about him, or put his favourite game on. If he is not inclined towards sports, maybe you can put the news on or even his favourite show on.
- Do dad’s weekend chores for him (or with him)
What do most dad’s do on the weekend? All the little jobs they do not have time for during the week. Offer to help dad make a list and then either do the chores for him or help him as he does them. He will appreciate your help and the two of you will get to spend a little extra time together.
- Give dad a relaxing massage
Your old man has been working hard ever since you can remember. Offer to give him a backrub and a foot massage to help him relax and take a break.
- Write dad a letter that tells him how much you love him
There is no time like now to let your dad know how much he means to you. Get a piece of paper and a pencil and tell him, in writing, how important he is in your life. It does not take a lot of time to share your heartfelt thoughts and just imagine how much it will mean to your dad when he sees them.
Whatever you decide to do for your dad, remember it is not the size of the gift that counts but rather the thought behind it. Dads enjoy time spent with their children. The little moments that you spend with him makes your relationship stronger and helps the two of you bond. Making time for him, and letting him know how much the time he has given to you means, is something he will remember for a long, long time!
